COMPLETION

The Swinburne "Factory of the Future" is an innovative new invention space constructed completely out of prefabricated timber elements. The structure was modelled in Finite Element software and detailed with both standard framing connectors, custom brackets and innovative self-drilling screws up to 400mm in length.
The LVL ribs were precisely cut on all sides on the CNC, while the 2-way curved plywood panels were laminated on a custom jig in the shop to develop the complex curvature.
Manufactured from a curved timber substructure with curved timber ply skin covering it. In order to get all components to work, each element had to be modelled, curved and cut using the Finite Element software to aid within the process, afterwards being place by hand creating the perfect look for this unique timber dome.
The "Factory of the Future" received the 2015 Australian Timber Design award in the ‘Excellence in the Use of Timber Products – Timber Panels’ category.
