Set in the heart of Phillip Island, the Cowes’ Berninneit Cultural and Community Centre was designed as a cultural centrepiece for the town, housing a theatre, library, gallery, museum, community function rooms and offices. The use of timber was an intentional tribute to the area’s natural beauty, with the exposed timber featuring heavily throughout the multi-purpose building.
Specialised Timber Fabrication supplied 60 masslam beams and columns for the project, with pressed glulam sourced from Australian Sustainable Hardwood and coated with 2 coats of Intergrain Ultra Clear Exterior. These fabricated timber components were transported to site and installed by Standstruct in rapid time with precision megant bracketry.
The project won a number of awards, including the Australian Timber Design Award for Sustainability in 2024.
