Constructed for RMIT Melbourne’s ‘New Academic Street’ (NAS) precinct, the lush ‘Garden Building’ is an impressive 4-storey open building with a rooftop terrace. The massive GLT timber frame and TCC (Timber Concrete Composite) floor is not only eye-catching, but contributes to the building’s 5 Star Green Interiors Design rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.

Using 100m3 GL18 Hardwood sourced from ASH, Specialised Timber Fabrication crafted 450x450 columns and 600x135 rafters for the frame, and pre-poured the TCC floor panels in our factory before transporting to site for installation. This pre-fabrication process proves another benefit for the adoption of engineered timber designs, as the whole structure was installed in only 15 days.

The Garden building has since won a multitude of prestigious awards, many of them recognising the building’s innovative use of mass-timber construction and sustainable design.
