Monash Chancellery Balustrade

The architectural intent for this project required a seamless continuous timber handrail. Due to the multiple curves and radii, TGA developed a thick plywood form. As no curve and segments were the same, the only practical solution was to CNC every segment out of a panel.

The segments were then stack-assembled with PU adhesive and SPAX screws. 220m3 volume of plywood locally sourced from Carter Holt Harvey plywood mill in Myrtleford, Victoria.

The engineering drawings were created from the model the architect assembled. With the use of 3D computer modelling and optimisation software, this would guarantee the most effective way to minimise waste. In the end there was less than 10 percent waste. 

There were 80 pieces in total, and over 5kms of plywood or 300 cubic metres which were an integral part to successfully construct.
